How to Be Successful in Your Job Search

It doesn’t matter whether you just graduated from college or you have been in the workforce for several years, the rules of job hunting are the same. To get the best results, here are a few things you should do:
1. Don’t complicate things while job hunting. Investigate online job boards, newspaper ads, and company websites for job openings. If you are looking for general jobs, create online profiles on www.hotjobs.com, www.monster.com, www.localhelpwanted.net, or www.careerbuilder.com. If you are looking for a job in a specialized field such as finance or wealth management, look at job boards that cater to those markets such as www.efinancialcareers.com and www.wealthcareers.com.
2. Create a network list. Ask family members and friends if they have connections at the company that interests you. Join associations, attend seminars and workshops and meet people. This always helps expand your network and makes job hunting easier.
3. For your job hunt, create one master resume that describes all your work history and education and customize it based on the jobs you are interested in applying. For example, whatever phrases you see in the job description that directly apply to you, modify your resume descriptions to match those that are shown on the job description.
4. If you’ve been job hunting, submitting resumes, and not getting any responses, look at your resume. Your cover letter and resume should not be longer than two pages combined. Human resource managers see hundreds of resumes per day. You don’t want to bore them with a bunch of irrelevant information. You have about five seconds to capture their attention. Therefore, you want to highlight transferable skills and your best assets. Keep job descriptions concise. At this point, the objective is to get a telephone screening or face-to-face interview.
5. Don’t get discouraged if you have not received any callbacks. Be diligent in your search by keeping it narrow and focused. Remember you can’t be everything to everyone.
Job hunting is never easy, not at any level. But be thorough and eventually you will find the right job!
